Ballet

Ballet is a theatrical type of dance that was started in the Italian Renaissance courts in the 15th Century. It then became widely popular in France, England and Russia whom all took the art and developed it into their own forms. It is often performed to Opera music to help tell a dramatic story but has recently been brought into the 21st Century by infusing it with Modern Dance. Other forms of Ballet include Expressionist ballet and Neoclassical ballet.

Tap

Tap is a form of dance which characterized by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates that are attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer’s shoe. These metal plates, when tapped against a hard surface, create a percussive sound. There are over 8 different types of Tap Dancing and during 1930-1950 there where many famous faces who tap danced including Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Shirley Temple and Gene Kelly, and in 2006 a special little tap dancing penguin called Happy Feet became the star of the animated movie “Happy Feet”.

Modern

Modern dance is a form of dance which focuses on expressing inner emotions and using a free-flowing, interpretive style rather then following the rules of other dance disciplines, such as Ballet. When Modern Dance came about in the 20th century it was considered extremely radical as it was far different from anything else in the dance world. Since then it was became closely mingled with other dance disciplines such as Jazz, Ballet and Tap.
